Frequently Asked Questions
What type of saunas are these?
We sell premium, commercial grade traditional Finnish-style saunas, designed in Canada along with infrared sauna units. These are considered "dry saunas" that are designed to be enjoyed at an air temperature of 160F to 200F. With our sauna heaters, it is also possible to add water to the sauna rocks to create steam, if you prefer more humidity in the air. We also produce infrared saunas as that run much cooler (around only 130F to 140F).
What are the order lead times required?
Most saunas, cold plunges and accessories we hold in stock, are already built and available to be shipped from our warehouse within 5-7 business days, typically delivered to your location within 10-12 business days, depending on the shipping transit time. If not in stock we require 4-6 weeks lead time to manufacture the unit.
Do you install the sauna or are they a DIY kit?
Outside of custom sauna builds which we frequent, all saunas are designed as a "kit" which have been prebuilt for easy assembly by the user. For an additional cost we offer installation for Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and PEI residents. If you require installation are are located in a different provenience, please reach out and we are happy to help, and look to recommend a third party installer.
Do you wire and hook up electric sauna heaters?
No, all electrical must be done by a certified electrician to the code standards within your region. We do not offer any installation for electrical components.
Can I use water on the rocks of my sauna heater?
Of course, water can be gently ladled on to the rocks to create steam or "löyly"
Please note when pouring water on the rocks, do so slowly and only when the sauna is at full temperature. The water should evaporate instantly when it hits the rocks. If you notice water coming out the bottom of the heater it means you are pouring too fast or too much. If you like to use a lot of water in the sauna, it is recommended to buy a sauna fountain. These stones which sit amongst the rocks and help create steam inside the sauna.

Can I use aromatherapy oil or essential oils in my water?
Yes! You may add aromatherapy oils or essential oils to your water bucket to create a scented steam. The classic scents used are birch, pine and eucalyptus, however there are a very wide variety of oils you can use. All essential oils are formulated differently, so make sure yours does not leave any residue on the rocks.
What should I do if I need replacement parts?
If any part of your sauna breaks, contact us and let us know. We stock replacements of nearly all parts and can get replacements on their way to you quickly, so you can get back to enjoying the heat.
How much maintenance does the sauna require?
One of the best features of Calore saunas is that general maintenance is minimal. In most cases, the only thing required is a wipe-down of the surfaces inside the sauna to remove dirt, perspiration, and other spots that arise during regular use. Check our "Maintenance" section for more details.
How long will it take to pre-heat the sauna?
Preheating the sauna typically takes 45 to 60 minutes depending on a variety of factors, including: your heater strength, your sauna size, the outdoor temperature and your desired sauna temperature. It may take longer 60 minutes to heat your sauna to higher temperatures (above 200F) or if you are saunaing in very cold weather (below 20F).
Are saunas water tight?
Without a roof installed, no they are not designed to be. With a roof installed properly, yes. it is normal to experience water leaking through the roof boards, all barrel saunas without a roof are not watertight, and the interlocking staves do not form a watertight seal.
How hot should my sauna be?
Traditional saunas run between 160°F and 200°F, measured at shoulder height when seated on the upper bench (or simply on the main bench if you have single level seating). Heat stacks in a sauna, so it's normal that the floor will be much cooler than at your head. If you find your head gets too hot, you can wear a sauna hat. Sauna hats are made of a wool/felt blend, which helps keep your head cool. This allows you to feel more of the heat sensation on your body.
Sauna Care and Maintenance
How do I maintain and clean the interior of my sauna?
Treating your benches with paraffin oil reduces the amount of sweat and dirt that can be absorbed into the benches, which increases their life span. We recommend treating new benches before using them and repeat the treatment once or twice a year when cleaning the sauna. The paraffin oil is colorless and odorless, but will give the wood a slightly darker ‘wet’ look after its applied. Wood surfaces must be completely dry before you start the oil treatment.
Under normal conditions, washing the interior of the sauna every 3 to 4 months will maintain cleanliness. Refrain from using ammonia or harsh cleaners as they can turn the wood gray.
Under normal conditions, washing the interior of the sauna every 3 to 4 months will maintain cleanliness. Refrain from using ammonia or harsh cleaners as they can turn the wood gray.
Wash the wood with a sponge or soft bristle brush. Always brush with the grain of the wood. If dirt is embedded in the benches, you can sand them down lightly. Rinse the sauna thoroughly with water to remove the cleaning solution. Run the heater for 1 to 2 hours to dry the room.
Sauna bathing might have accumulated visible limescale stains on the surface of the heater. You should re-stack your sauna stones every 6 months as the stones’ structure will change over time in high heat and the pile of stones could cause the coils to bend into each other. We recommend replacing the rocks every 12-18 months.
After you have finished a sauna session, we recommend running the heater for an additional 60 minute cycle with the door closed. This will dehumidify the room and dry out the wood. If you are using your sauna regularly (i.e., multiple times a week) and drying out the room after each session, this should largely prevent mold formation.,

Should I install shingles or a roof on my sauna?
Without a roof installed, it is normal to experience water leaking through the roof boards. The interlocking staves do not form a watertight seal. We recommend installing our wood or asphalt roof shingles if you purchased them, or sourcing your own roofing materials locally. For additional protection, install a roofing underlay beneath your shingles. It's normal for some water to seep into your sauna on a rainy day, especially on days when wind is blowing rain onto the side walls of your sauna. This will not harm your sauna or diminish its lifespan. After a heavy rainfall, we recommend you turn the heater on for a 1-hour cycle to dry out the room. Running the heater a couple of times a week during the wetter months will help prevent mold or mildew from developing.
How do I clean the exterior of my sauna?
Hose it off gently with water to remove debris and stains.
We recommend adding a roof of your sauna as they will significantly increase your sauna's longevity and water resistance.
How often should I adjust or replace my sauna rocks?
When you use your sauna, the rocks in the sauna heater will be heated to very high temperatures and then cool back down. Over time, this heating and cooling cycle creates cracks in the rocks that will grow. Eventually, your rocks will break into smaller pieces and you may even see pieces of rock or dust come out of the bottom of your heater.
As the rocks shrink they will settle inside the heater. You may notice it looks your rocks are gradually 'sinking'. This process can push the coils out of position and into contact with one another.
This is an issue because if your coils come into contact with each other they will quickly burn out and need to be replaced.
We recommend that every 6 months you turn off your sauna heater at the breaker and remove all the rocks, then re-stack them so the coils are in the correct position (vertical and not touching).
Harvia and HUUM also recommends that you replace out your rocks every 12 to 18 months depending on your use levels.

What should I do if water leaks into the sauna?
A small amount of water seeping into the sauna isn’t going to hurt it and is likely due to condensation. If you notice a substantial amount of seepage, this may mean that your bands have loosened, and water is getting in around the staves.
The wood will naturally shrink during warm dry weather so cracks can appear after extended periods of warm weather. The wood will also naturally shrink with age so cracks can appear after a few years of use. Check the tension of the bands every few months so you catch problems before they start. If you notice the bands are loose, retighten them following the same process as when first installing.
If you are unable to close cracks by tightening the bands, it means you need to add more staves under the bands. When the inside and outside of the sauna are dry, take apart the top portion of it and rebuild it with additional staves.
We recommend adding a roof of your sauna as they will significantly increase your sauna's longevity and water resistance.

Sauna Operations
What temperature do your saunas heat up to?
Typically people find that a temperature between 160F and 200F is ideal for their sauna
Our electric heaters are designed to heat the sauna to a maximum temperature of just above 200F. The heaters use a thermometer to gauge the temperature inside the sauna.
Our wood-fired stoves are not temperature limited and can heat the sauna up to >200F.
I just got my sauna and am about to warm it up, are there any special producers to "break it in" the first time I use it?
Before using the sauna rocks, it's important to rinse off any rock dust to prevent potential smoke emission from the heater during the initial use. Failure to clean the rocks may result in burning of dust or other particles.
Once your sauna is assembled and operational, it's advisable to initiate a "break-in" session before regular use. Set the sauna to its highest temperature setting and maintain it for approximately one hour. This process aids in burning off any residual oils and impurities from manufacturing, while also conditioning the woodwork.
After about 45 minutes into the session, gradually pour approximately 1 liter of cold water onto the rocks. Ensure that all water turns into steam and does not seep out from the bottom of the heater. If water leaks from the bottom, it indicates pouring too quickly.
What are the costs associated with running a sauna?
Running the sauna heater doesn't cost much in electricity for most people.
Unlike a hot tub that runs 24/7, the sauna heater only uses power when you're using it. So, it doesn't add much to your electricity bill.
Plus, it runs on high-voltage electricity, which is more efficient than regular household power.
How do I make my sauna hotter?
For optimal performance, we suggest positioning the thermometer approximately 12 inches to the right or left of the heater and about 20 inches below the ceiling.
Since heat naturally rises in the sauna, the top will be hotter than the bottom. If you want to increase the sauna's temperature, place the thermometer lower. We recommend lowering it gradually, about 3 inches at a time. After each adjustment, use the sauna a few times to gauge its maximum temperature at that height. Keep lowering until you reach your desired temperature.
Running the sauna at high temperatures carries risks, so customers do it at their own discretion. It's advisable to consult with a doctor before using the sauna, especially if you have any health concerns.
Can I pour water on the sauna rocks?
Absolutely! Our heaters are specifically engineered to handle water being poured on them. When water is poured, it evaporates, generating steam and creating a steam-filled atmosphere, which many users find preferable to the dry sauna sensation.
It's important to pour an amount of water that can easily evaporate on the rocks. Make sure not to overdo it, just take it slow, unwind, and enjoy the experience.

Frequently Asked Questions
How frequent do I need to change the water?
This will vary depending on whether you're using the tub with a chiller, treating the water with sanitizer, or using it as a standalone. All Calore cold plunges have either a built in chiller and filter kit or come with one separately and we recommend using it at all times when the temperature is above freezing.
If you're not using the built in chiller and not treating the water with a sanitizer like bromine, it's best to change the water after each session. Without a chiller but with bromine and oxidizer, your water may last around 7 days, depending on your tub usage frequency. Using a chiller helps circulate and clean the water, so you won't need to change it as often.
With the chiller built in cleaning system, we recommend changing the water every 2 weeks, considering how often you use the tub. More frequent usage may require more frequent water changes.

Does it come with a cover?
Yes! A PVC cover is included with the tub. The cover pulls tight to the edges of the tub and keeps out any leaves or debris.
How cold will the cold plunge get?
The cold plunges will indeed become very cold, reaching temperatures as low as 2 degress celcius.
How long does it take to cool down/heat up?
The actual cooling or heating time will vary depending on factors such as the initial water temperature, water volume, and ambient air temperature.
Our chiller typically cools water at a rate of approximately 10-12°F per hour. For instance, it takes about 2.5 hours to cool water from 65°F to 37°F.
It's important to note that these heating and cooling times are based on a well-insulated 100-gallon tub.
Larger tubs or those with poor insulation will have slower cooling rates.
Conversely, the water heats up faster, with the machine heating water at a rate of about 15°F per hour. For example, it takes around 3 hours to heat water from 65°F to 104°F in the same tub.
In colder temperatures, particularly below 40°F, the chiller's heating efficiency may decrease, resulting in longer heat-up times. However, in drier climates (i.e., 80% relative humidity), heating performance may start to decline before reaching 40°F.
Do I need to use any chemicals to keep the water clean?
No, with our cold plunge chillers including built in micron filters and ozone generation systems along with regulars water changing every 2 weeks, they do not require regular chemical usage. If you desire to leave your water unchanged more regularly or you feel that your water is becoming dirty, you can use a water sanitizer or bromine to enhance the longevity of your water between changes. We do however still recommend changing out your water every 2 weeks depending on your usage.
How does the cold plunge chiller work?
The chillers operate similarly to an air conditioner but with water as the working fluid instead of air.
Your tub's water is pumped out and circulated through a heat exchanger. Within the heat exchanger, the water's temperature decreases as a refrigerant evaporates, cooling it down. The now-cooled water returns to your tub, while the refrigerant is condensed back into a liquid in the radiator, ready to be used again.
How much space is required for ventilation of the cold plunge chiller?
Having space for ventilation is very important. If the system is not properly ventilated and overheats, it will automatically shut off.
There should be at least 3 feet of space behind the chiller to allow enough room for air to circulate and the hot air to escape from the machine.
If you find your machine is turning off, it may be because the ventilation is not sufficient and the machine is overheating.
Can I install indoors?
Yes, of course! If using indoors, make sure there is enough ventilation for the heat from the chiller to dissipate. The water chiller operates similar to an air conditioner and expels hot air from the radiator using a fan. If ventilation in the room you’re using is not sufficient, the machine will overheat and automatically turn off.
Can I install my cold plunge outdoors?
Yes! Absolutely. Just be sure if you live in a climate with freezing conditions to follow the instructions below to ensure the water does not freeze.
I live where it is below freezing, what do I need to do to "winterize" it?
If you live in climate with freezing conditions, you need to ensure that the water in your tub does not freeze. If the water in your tub freezes and expands it can damage and crack the plumbing (just like an exploded bottle left in the freezer). Damage from freezing is not covered under warranty.

2) Unhook the chiller and all piping, leaving the plugs inside of the plumbing holes to keep in all of the water in the tub. Leave your chiller and piping indoors for the cold months.
3) Drain the tub.
3) Drain the tub.
How often do I need to change the filter?
A filter cartridge typically has a lifespan of approximately 12 months, provided it's regularly cleaned.
For optimal performance of your filtration system, it's advisable to clean the filter and the strainer at the chiller inlet once a month.
To clean the filter cartridge, remove it from the filter and submerge it in a bucket of water mixed with a cleaning agent. Allow it to soak for approximately 24 hours. Afterward, rinse the cartridge thoroughly and let it air dry. Once dry, reinstall the filter cartridge into the filtration system.
We suggest purchasing filter cartridges in pairs. This way, when it's time to clean one, you can continue using your hot tub with the spare cartridge. By alternating between cartridges, you can avoid downtime during cleaning and reduce the frequency of cartridge purchases.
Sauna Care and Maintenance
How do I change my water?
Be sure to first turn off the cold plunges chiller completely. Once you have remove the drain plug located at the bottom corner of your cold plunge to drain out thoroughly.
Once the water has been drained we recommend utilizing the time to clean the units interior using a very mild detergent and a soft cloth of sponge. This will help to clean all walls and increase the hygiene of the water.
After you have cleaned, refill the water with a hose (any temperature will work) making sure you had screwed the drain cap back in place.

What foundation do I need to place the cold plunge on?
Filled with water will, The Revive Cold Plunge, along with our other cold plunges can weigh up to and over 2,000 lbs.
Your foundation must be strong enough to support the full weight of the tub (2,000 lbs). We recommend placing the tub on a concrete pad or wooden deck that is engineered to support the weight of the filled tub.
We do not recommend placing the tub directly on dirt as it can sink into the ground due to the weight.
Are the cold plunges loud?
Not at all, they are quite quiet. When running, the chiller emits approximately 50 DB.
This is approximately the same noise level as a small electric fan or dishwasher.

The main noise you will hear when the chiller is operating is from the fan that is used to expel the hot air.
Are the cold plunges and chillers expensive to operate?
This will depend on the cost of electricity in your area, however, in general these machines are not high power (use ~1kWh), and therefore not expensive to run.
For most users who turn the plunge on only turn it on when when in use and preparing for use (cooling down) it is ~$10-$20 per month.

How often does the cold plunge /chiller run?
The chiller operates until it reaches the desired temperature setting. Once this temperature is attained, the chiller switches to monitoring mode. It cycles on and off as required to sustain the water at your preferred temperature. The frequency of the chiller's operation is contingent upon outdoor temperatures and the degree of cooling required.
